Hosting on Discord
Everything you need to know to run a game for your friends on Discord.
Before You Begin
Make sure you have the Offbook bot added to your Discord server. You’ll need Manage Server permissions to invite the bot and configure the channel it uses.
Setting Up a Session
Once the bot is in your server, use the /newshow command in any text channel. The bot will create a dedicated thread for your session and prompt players to join.
Choose a game from the list the bot presents. Each game will show its recommended player count and estimated runtime so you can pick one that fits your group.
Inviting Players
Share the thread link with your friends, or have them join directly from the channel. Players join by reacting to the lobby message — no accounts or sign-ups required beyond having a Discord account.
Tip: For the best experience, make sure everyone has notifications enabled for the thread so they don’t miss their cue.
Running the Game
As the host, you’ll see a few extra controls:
- Start — begins the game once enough players have joined
- Pause — freezes the game timer if someone needs a break
- End — wraps up the session early if needed
Players interact by typing responses in the thread. The bot will address each character by name and keep the story moving.
After the Show
When the game ends, the bot posts a summary of key moments and choices. You can pin this message or screenshot it for posterity. The thread stays open so your group can debrief and laugh about what happened.
Troubleshooting
- Bot not responding? Check that it has permission to read and send messages in the channel.
- Players can’t join? Make sure the thread isn’t archived or locked.
- Game feels stuck? Try the
/nudgecommand to prompt the current player.
