A Backrooms Story
The lights do not go off. The rooms do not run out.
You were somewhere ordinary a moment ago — a stairwell, a corridor, the middle of an afternoon. Then the floor gives, and the drop is not long enough to be a fall, and you come up on damp yellow carpet in a room whose ceiling carries on well past the point where the room should have ended. Every light above you is humming on the same long note. Before you have any evidence for it, you understand that the note does not stop.
you did not fall. the building moved.
Level 0 is free inside Discord. Bring somebody.
Nobody has to run it. The building is open whether or not anyone is inside, and the first person through the door does not have to be the same person twice.
Your server gets a building and holds on to it. The rooms you learned last week are the rooms that are there tonight. The wet stretch is still wet. What somebody wrote on the wall is still written on the wall.
Eight wanderers can be inside at once. Anyone past that waits at the edge of it and comes in as places open. A server that keeps filling up can have more of it opened.
You arrive on your own and find the others by walking. Leave whenever you like; leaving is not an ending. Dying is an ending, but only for the person you were.
It runs inside your Discord server, or from Steam on a desktop host. Nobody in charge.
All of Level 0, for as long as anyone wants to stay in it, at no cost and with nothing held back up here. No timer. No trial. No part of the floor you are standing on that costs money to walk on.
It is the top of the building and it is the whole of the offer: about twenty rooms of Level 0, and past them, more of Level 0.
In the lowest corner of the wet, the floor has parted from the wall, and there are steps.
What is under Level 0 is colder, and larger, and is not empty. It is also lit, and running, on the same steady load — a place kept that way because somebody keeps the lease on it.
A subscription holds that lease for your server. One person keeps it; it holds for everyone who plays there. While it holds, the stair is open and everything under it stays open.
If it lapses, nothing is taken away and nothing is deleted. Level 0 stays exactly as it was. The floors below go dark in the ordinary way — the way a thing is dark when nobody is paying to light it — and they come back on when the lease is taken up again.
The rooms do not run out. Somebody should go and see how far it goes.
Free. One to eight. Nothing to install.
